Learn the art of traditional mosaic making at our workshop in Poblenou, Barcelona!

In this workshop you will work with real ceramic tiles to assemble a pattern in a photo frame to hang on your wall. Tiles are handmade and fired in our kiln to produce a stunning ceramic finish. You’ll be guided by the workshop facilitator to understand and build timeless patterns found across Spain, the Middle East and India.

What the workshop covers

Welcome & introduction (20 minutes) – to start things off, we’ll provide a quick accessible introduction to Islamic geometric art, answering the big questions such as: Where did it come from? Who invented these patterns? How were the mosaics traditionally made? And most importantly – what does it take to become a master of mosaics yourself?

Assembling your pattern (1 1/2 hours) – now it’s over to you! Choose from a huge selection of interchangeable tiles to build the pattern you want. There will be space to experiment with different designs and colours, with the facilitator on hand to help at any time. We’ll provide a reference to some of the most famous patterns and where they came from so that you can make something truly authentic. Alternatively, invent your own pattern!

Once you’re happy with your pattern, we’ll help you to finish it off and assemble it in the frame, ready to take home.

Wrap-up (10 minutes) – we’ll finish off by taking the time to admire each other’s work, and our facilitator will explain where you can take things next in future classes!

Common questions

Do I need to bring anything?

No! All materials for the workshop are provided.

Do I need to wear anything in particular?

No special clothes are required for this particular workshop. We will not be working with paints in this workshop as the tiles are pre-fired and pre-glazed. 

Can I bring a custom frame?

You can bring your own frame for the tiles, but it must be a craft frame that can hold objects with depth (“marcos con profundidad”). A normal photo frame will not fit ceramic tiles!

Can I skip the introduction if I have already been to a class?

Of course! If you are ready to start working on your tile project, feel free to begin as soon as the workshop starts. Just let the facilitator know that you are ready to start.

How big is the photo frame?

The photo frame is 25x25cm. Each photo frame comes with a mount which can be adjustable depending on the size of the pattern you make. For best results, we recommend assembling a pattern of 15x15cm. In the class, we’ll provide a number of template patterns that you can work with and adapt – but you always have the freedom to design your own!

What if I don’t finish my frame in the time we have?

There will almost always be time to finish your frame within the workshop, but if necessary, you can return the next week free of charge to finish things off.
