Learn the art of traditional mosaic making at our workshop in Poblenou, Barcelona!

In this workshop you assemble – and paint – your own mosaic coaster from scratch. You’ll learn about basic islamic geometric patterns and how to assemble classic designs found across Spain and the Middle east. By the end you will have a beautiful, personalised coaster to use at home, or to gift to a friend!

This class is an excellent introduction to mosaic making for anyone, and is good preparation for our short Moroccan Mosaic course.

What the workshop covers

Welcome & introduction (20 minutes) – to start things off, we’ll provide a quick accessible introduction to Islamic geometric art, answering the big questions such as: Where did it come from? Who invented these patterns? How were the mosaics traditionally made? And most importantly – what does it take to become a master of mosaics yourself?

Choosing your pattern (45 minutes) – now it’s over to you! Choose from a huge selection of interchangeable tiles to build the pattern you want. We’ll provide a reference to some of the most famous patterns and where they came from so that you can make something truly authentic. Alternatively, invent your own pattern!

Painting and assembling your tiles (45 minutes) – time to paint! We provide a range of high-quality ceramic paints that can be combined to make any colour you choose. Once you’ve painted your tiles, we’ll help you to assemble your coaster and we’ll provide guidance on achieving the perfect finish, ready to take home.

Wrap-up (10 minutes) – we’ll finish the workshop by taking the time to admire each other’s work, and our facilitator will explain where you can take things next in future classes!

Common questions

Do I need to bring anything?

No! All materials for the workshop are provided.

Do I need to wear anything in particular?

Aprons will be provided but we recommend wearing clothes that you don’t mind getting paint on – just in case!

Can I skip the introduction if I have already been to a class?

Of course! If you are ready to start working on your tile project, feel free to begin as soon as the workshop starts. Just let the facilitator know that you are ready to start.

How big is the coaster?

The tile area for the coaster is 10x10cm but the overall coaster, including its wooden frame, is 12x12cm.

What if I don’t finish my coaster in the time we have?

There will almost always be time to finish your coaster within the workshop time, but if necessary, you can return the next week free of charge to finish things off.
