Mosaic Workshop – Tray/Mirror

Description

Learn the art of traditional mosaic making at our workshop in Poblenou, Barcelona!

This intermediate 3-week project, is a chance to go deeper into islamic geometric design and work with complex patters to construct a tray or mirror for your house. You’ll learn about more advanced composition techniques, work with a wider range of shapes and pieces, and explore proportion and framing as part of this project.

What to expect

For the first class, you’ll decide on the composition you want to create, as well as the colour scheme, with guidance from the workshop facilitator. By the end of this workshop, you’ll hopefully have selected the pieces you’ll use, ready to paint.

The second workshop is dedicated to painting and assembling your tiles in the frame. This is usually the most relaxed of the three workshops, where you can focus on the quality of your tiles, and see an early version of the piece when it comes together.

The third workshop involves finishing off your tray or mirror. You’ll carefully apply adhesive and grout to ensure the final piece is watertight, and optionally apply a finish to the wooden frame. By the end of the workshop, your piece is ready to take home.

Do I need to bring anything?

No! All materials for the workshop are provided.

Do I need to wear anything in particular?

Aprons will be provided but we recommend wearing clothes that you don’t mind getting paint on – just in case!

How big is the tray?

The tray is 25x35cm with an interior space of 23x33cm.

How big is the mirror?

The overall mirror frame is 30x40cm with a 21×30 interior mirror.
